When I first started yoga, I vividly remember that I couldn’t even completely straighten my legs because my hamstrings were so tight from sitting at my desk all day. However, after about a year of doing yoga twice a week, I could touch my toes with my legs completely straight – something I hadn’t been able to do since like 5th grade!

Next time you’re out in a crowd, look around. I would bet at least 75% of the people around you are hunched over on their phones. We’re all guilty of it and it’s SO BAD for our posture! Doing yoga poses like downward dog and cobra helps strengthen your core and back muscles, encouraging better posture and reversing the effects of chronic hunching. I’m pretty short (5’2) but after a yoga class, I seriously feel like I stand taller and straighter.
4. Stress Reduction
Any other type-A over-committers out there? If so, you probably also struggle with slowing down and feeling stressed/anxious a lot. Before yoga, I felt strung out all the time – any time I wasn’t working, I felt guilty and like I should be doing something productive. Yoga was a safe space where I could allow myself to slow down and solely focus on ME for 45 minutes to an hour. That made a huge difference in my stress levels and honestly, I was a better person and mom when I had that time to myself during the day.
5. Sound Sleep
Sleep is one of the most underrated aspects of health. Especially in your teens and 20s because you can get away with staying up late and getting up early. My 30s were a big wake-up call when I realized that I just cannot do that anymore and sleep has to be a priority for me to function in my everyday life. Yoga helped so much with that. I could tell a significant difference in my sleep quality on the days I did yoga versus the days I didn’t.
6. Energy Boost
Unlike caffeine or other quick fixes, yoga provides sustained energy by improving circulation and releasing stagnant tension from your body. On days when I’ve felt extra drained, even a short yoga session has left me feeling invigorated and ready to tackle the rest of my day. And bonus points: it won’t give you a caffeine headache like that 3 pm iced coffee (IYKYK).
7. Mind-Body Connection
One of the most profound benefits of yoga is the way it fosters a deeper connection between your physical and mental states. It helps you become more attuned to your body’s needs and signals. Personally, yoga has taught me to listen to my body—to rest when I need it and to push myself when I’m capable. I also did a lot of yoga while I was pregnant with my second baby and I truly think it helped me feel more connected to my body, even though I tend to feel less connected when I’m pregnant.

Some studies suggest that yoga can boost immune system function by reducing stress and inflammation while promoting better circulation. I’ve personally noticed that I get fewer colds and illnesses since making yoga a regular part of my routine—it’s like giving my body a natural boost.
