Iced coffee is my love language, so naturally, I spend a lot of time at Starbucks. For many years, I ordered fancy drinks (looking at you, Java Chip Frappuccino!), but then I caught a glimpse of the nutrition facts and was shocked. Over 60 grams of sugar in one medium-sized frappuccino – which is wild considering that women should only be consuming around 25 grams of added sugar each day! Needless to say, I quickly found myself looking for healthier alternatives to get my caffeine fix.
This post is all about the top 10 healthiest iced coffee drinks available at Starbucks.
Top 10 Healthiest Cold Starbucks Drinks:
1. Cold Brew Coffee
You can’t go wrong with traditional cold brew – it’s only 5 calories, it tastes good, and a grande offers over 200 milligrams of caffeine. You can always add a little splash of creamer or flavored syrup if the plain coffee taste is too bitter but personally, I think their cold brew is pretty drinkable black.
2. Nitro Cold Brew
I don’t love anything nitro because I think it ends up tasting “flat,” but if you like nitro coffee drinks, I hear this one is pretty good. Just like their cold brew, it’s only 5 calories for a grande but packs a bigger punch of caffeine with 280 milligrams.
3. Iced Coffee
Another staple at Starbucks is their iced coffee. It’s also only 5 calories for a grande, but it has slightly less caffeine (185 milligrams) than cold brew so it’s a good option if you need a smaller energy boost.
4. Iced Caffè Americano
I used to think this drink was so boring but as I’ve gotten older (and maybe also I’ve gotten more boring, idk?), it’s started tasting pretty good. This drink is essentially just espresso shots served over ice, so you have to really like the taste of coffee to enjoy this drink. A grande is only 15 calories and has 225 milligrams of caffeine – I like that ratio!
5. Iced Skinny Latte
This is another one of my go-to drinks at Starbucks when I need some caffeine but don’t want a “boring” coffee drink. If you’re ordering on the app, order an “iced caffe latte” and change the milk to nonfat milk. This cuts the drink’s calories by half but you still get a big dose (150 milligrams) of caffeine. You can also make it flavored for a few extra calories by asking for a couple of pumps of one of their sugar-free syrups. I like vanilla.
6. Iced Black Tea
This is a great option if you need a super small caffeine boost – maybe just something to get you through the afternoon slump. It’s literally zero calories but it has 30 milligrams of caffeine.
7. Iced Passion Tango Tea
Okay, so this one is solely just a fun drink that I enjoy sometimes when I want something cold to drink but don’t need caffeine. It’s zero calories and has no caffeine, but it tastes good. This one is especially nice on a hot summer afternoon – so refreshing!
8. Iced Shaken Espresso
If the thought of a super bitter coffee drink grosses you out but you generally like espresso, this is the drink for you. It’s made with espresso shorts but shaken with milk, which takes the bitterness out of the drink. There are 100 calories and 225 milligrams of caffeine in a grande.
9. Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso
This drink came out a couple of years ago and it’s been my go-to ever since. It’s sweet but not too sweet and has a lot less calories than other flavored Starbucks drinks. A grande is only 120 calories and 255 milligrams of caffeine – my kind of ratio.
10. Iced Energy
Starbucks recently came out with their take on an energy drink and it is SOLID. This is the perfect afternoon pick-me-up for when you need a second dose of caffeine but aren’t feeling another coffee. It comes in two flavors – melon and tropical citrus, both of which are less than 10 calories and have over 180 milligrams of caffeine. Both flavors are good but the melon one gets the nod from me.
